Prayer

The Bible continuously gives us stories about "conversations" between God and people. Prayer was central to Jesus' life and ministry. Throughout the ages prayer has always been part of the spiritual life of people like Ignatius of Loyola, Dag Hammerskjold, Albert Schweitzer, Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton and, and, and...

Yet... many of us struggle with prayer.
How can we, how can you have a more "positive" experience of prayer.

Perhaps these few thoughts can help you:
  • Feel how your body reacts when you inhale and exhale.
  • How long can you stop breathing? (Eventually we all do...!)
  • As long as you breathe, you are alive. Life is "present" in you.
  • In the same way, God is present to you. You are in God's presence.
  • Can you be aware of that?
  • That is prayer.
  • Anything that follows (silence, words, "a conversation", music...) is prayer.

When we know this is what "prayer" is, we can understand the words:
Pray without ceasing. ( 1 Thess 5:17).
